The Hillsborough Dental Story - how it all began

It was October 1998 and I was feeling a little apprehensive.
Google had just been established; Bill Clinton was facing intense questioning over the Monica Lewinsky affair and Saving Private Ryan was the top movie, but as well as all this - Hillsborough Dental had officially opened its doors for the first time.
I had only five patients on my books, and what’s worse - they were all family members on the scrounge.
There was a lot of stress and uncertainty, which now I know is part and parcel of opening a new business.
But nonetheless, I was fulfilling a dream of mine, to have my own practice in Hillsborough, County Down, in the area where I grew up.
There was just one thing though - I didn’t want this to be a regular dental practice.
No, I wanted something a little bit more…

I’m a perfectionist.
I just can’t help it - it’s the way I am.
It drives people crazy. It drives my wife crazy. In fact, at times it even drives me crazy.
I just seem to be able to see everything in minute detail and I like it all to be perfect, and for anyone who can relate to this, you’ll know, it can be torturous.
But as I’ve lived with this over the years, I’ve come to realize that whilst being a perfectionist has its problems, it also has many positive sides. For instance, it’s because of my perfectionism that I knew right from the outset the sort of practice I wanted to open - I wanted a place where dentistry would be done right…
